Panic Disorder Treatment

Panic Disorder Treatment in Las Vegas, NV

Panic disorder is a debilitating anxiety condition characterized by sudden, unexplained attacks of overwhelming fear and loss of control, both physically and psychologically. During a panic attack, individuals may feel a terrifying sense of danger, embarrassment, or even fear for their life. Although panic attacks can sometimes be triggered by specific stressors, they often occur unpredictably, adding to their distressing nature.

People who experience panic disorder may begin to avoid certain situations or places where previous attacks have occurred, fearing that another attack could strike at any moment. While the exact causes of panic attacks are not fully understood, genetics appear to play a significant role, as panic disorder tends to run in families. Current research is focused on identifying potential brain areas involved in triggering these episodes.

Thankfully, Panic Disorder Treatment in Las Vegas provides effective therapies and support to help individuals manage symptoms, reduce the frequency of attacks, and reclaim their sense of control and confidence.

Symptoms of Panic Disorder

Panic attacks often come with intense physical symptoms that can include:

  • Tachycardia (rapid heartbeat)

  • Chest pain or discomfort

  • Gastrointestinal distress

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

  • Hot flashes or chills

  • Shortness of breath

  • Tingling or numbness

  • Fear of dying

These attacks typically last for several minutes up to an hour. Because their symptoms resemble those of a heart attack, individuals experiencing them often seek emergency medical care. Once medical tests rule out physical causes, a panic attack diagnosis is made. If these attacks happen repeatedly, the individual is diagnosed with panic disorder. Unfortunately, the fear of having another panic attack can become self-perpetuating, leading patients to restrict their activities, and in severe cases, avoid leaving the house altogether.

Symptoms of Panic Disorder

Diagnosing Panic Disorder

Diagnosing panic disorder typically involves:

  • Medical history & physical examination – A healthcare provider will review your medical history and conduct a physical exam to rule out underlying medical conditions, such as heart disease or thyroid problems, that may cause similar symptoms.
  • Psychological evaluation – The provider will assess the frequency, triggers, and characteristics of your panic attacks, along with the impact on your daily life.
  • Diagnostic criteria (DSM-5) – Your symptoms will be compared to the criteria outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) to confirm a diagnosis of panic disorder.
  • Questionnaires or assessments – These tools, such as the Panic Disorder Severity Scale (PDSS), may be used to gauge the severity and frequency of panic attacks and evaluate how they affect your quality of life.
  • Differential diagnosis – The doctor will differentiate panic disorder from other potential conditions, such as generalized anxiety disorder or specific phobias, to ensure an accurate diagnosis.

Effective treatment for panic disorder often includes a combination of medication and psychotherapy. While various therapeutic methods can help alleviate general anxiety, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has proven especially effective in treating panic disorder. CBT helps patients confront and change the thought patterns that fuel their fear and avoidance behaviors.

For immediate relief during panic attacks, tranquilizers may be prescribed to reduce the intensity of the symptoms. Antidepressants, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), can also be used to reduce the frequency and severity of panic attacks over time. However, it’s important to note that antidepressants may take several weeks to become effective, and patients must be carefully monitored, especially since there is a risk of suicidal thoughts in children, adolescents, and young adults. Fortunately, if such side effects occur, they are usually temporary and can be managed with professional care.

Barbra at Mighty Mental Health has been absolutely amazing. Both I and one of my children see her, and I cannot say enough good things about the care she provides.

One of the things I appreciate most is that she truly listens. That’s surprisingly hard to find in a psychiatrist. I have Borderline Personality Disorder along with other mental health challenges, and not once has Barbra made me feel judged, dismissed, or less than because of my diagnosis. Unfortunately, that has not been my experience with many providers in the past. She approaches every conversation with compassion, understanding, and respect.

She has also been wonderful with my child. As a parent, making decisions about mental health treatment—especially medication for a young child—can be incredibly difficult and emotional. Barbra never pressures or dismisses concerns. Instead, she takes the time to listen, answer questions, and work through concerns together. She approaches my child with patience, understanding, and genuine care.

Barbra has helped both of us feel supported, heard, and understood. Her compassion and ability to connect with her patients make her truly stand out. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a provider who combines knowledge, empathy, and exceptional patient care.

Barbra is absolutely phenomenal. Her knowledge, professionalism, and attention to detail are second to none. She takes the time to truly listen, understand your needs, and provide expert recommendations tailored specifically to you. Throughout the entire process, I felt confident that I was receiving the highest level of care and guidance. Her expertise and dedication set her apart, and I wouldn’t trust anyone else. I highly recommend Barbra to anyone looking for exceptional service and outstanding results.

I have been a patient of Barbara’s for a few years now and have seen great change in myself since starting as a patient here I thank Barbara for that. Her bedside manner is amazing, she is thorough and extremely knowledgeable. Everyone at front has always been great. Liz is great at responding quickly and getting answers you may need with a very friendly manner. It’s always clean and bright, colorful and they make you feel very comfortable there. All around you can not only see but feel everyone there truly cares for their patients and that is most important when you need help.

Have been with Barbara for a few years. She cares about her patients. She is detail oriented and does her best finding the right medication or help outside of her office. Always a pleasant and satisfying experience. Today she was observing a patient appreciation month. It was exciting to see all the homemade gifts she and her staff prepared for her patients totally free and a gift to show her gratitude.i look forward to continuing my care with her.i would definitely recommend her to anyone seeking assistance. A rare gem in this community of rushed physicians and flawed healthcare

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes panic disorder, and can it be prevented?

Panic disorder’s exact causes remain unclear, but research suggests a combination of genetic factors, brain chemistry, and life stressors may contribute. While it may not be possible to prevent panic disorder, early intervention, such as therapy and lifestyle changes, can help manage symptoms and reduce the likelihood of recurrent attacks.

How long does panic disorder treatment take to show results?

The duration of treatment varies for each individual. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can show improvements in a few weeks, while antidepressants may take 4-6 weeks to become fully effective. Patients may need to continue treatment for several months or longer to manage and prevent future attacks.

Are there any side effects associated with medication for panic disorder?

Yes, some patients may experience side effects from medications such as antidepressants or tranquilizers. Common side effects can include drowsiness, nausea, or weight gain. It’s important to have regular follow-up appointments with a healthcare provider to monitor side effects, especially in younger individuals, as antidepressants can sometimes cause suicidal thoughts.

Can panic disorder be managed without medication?

Yes, panic disorder can often be managed through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), relaxation techniques, and lifestyle changes. CBT is a highly effective psychotherapy that helps individuals change their patterns of thinking and behavior that contribute to panic attacks. Some patients may opt for non-medication treatments or use them in combination with therapy.
